- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 3 cups mixed dried fruits (raisins, currants, chopped dates)
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or almonds)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1 egg, beaten (for glaze)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add cold water, stirring until the dough comes together. Divide into two portions, wrap in plastic, and chill for 30 minutes.
- In another bowl, combine sugar, dried fruits, nuts, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
- Roll out one dough portion to fit a 9-inch pie dish. Place the dough in the dish.
- Fill with the fruit mixture. Roll out the second dough portion and place it over the filling. Seal edges and cut slits on top.
- Brush the top with beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool before serving.
Notes
- You can substitute mixed dried fruits with fresh apples or pears if preferred.
- For a richer flavor, soak dried fruits in rum or brandy overnight.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
