A black heart-shaped birthday cake recipe that’s perfect for celebrations. It’s moist, rich, and visually striking.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- Black food coloring (gel-based, as needed)
- 1 batch of your favorite frosting (black or contrasting color)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a heart-shaped cake pan.
- In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
- Stir in boiling water. The batter will be thin. Add black food coloring until desired darkness is achieved.
- Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once cooled, frost with your preferred frosting.
Notes
- Gel food coloring works best for deep black color without thinning the batter.
- For best results, chill the cake before frosting.
- Pair with colorful sprinkles or edible glitter for contrast.
