Ingredients

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- Black food coloring (as needed)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch heart-shaped cake pans.
- Mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
- Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat for 2 minutes on medium speed.
- Stir in boiling water and black food coloring until smooth.
- Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.
- Frost and decorate as desired once fully cooled.
Notes
- For deeper black color, use gel food coloring.
- Store leftover cake in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
